Book excerpt: Embark is a historical and entertaining story set in outback Western Queensland, Australia, in the 1920's. The main character is Sam Knowles, a young American lawyer who finds himself in the Australian outback due to his love of opal and adventure. The story revolves around a horse, a struggling small farming family and the lanky Sam. Throughout the book are the social forces they have to confront in a harsh, inhospitable land, renowned for producing some of the world's best gemstone opal. Embark is an aging, barren, neglected race mare who had a successful racing career. Although she is a central theme throughout the story, she by no means dominates it. She is the link connecting the many different facets of human nature that chose this distant country in which the story is set. The characters and events give us the ability to re-live the struggles of the period, when technology was in its infancy. Join Sam and his friends as you are transported into an almost alien environment and another century, and experience life in a way we cannot imagine.
