Book excerpt: The investigation was concerned with analysis of one-dimensional tidal motion in the two principal types of tidal waterways: (1) estuaries open to the ocean at one end and merging with a river at the opposite end; and (2) canals or waterways connecting two independent tidal bodies. The objectives of the research program were to classify tidal problems in terms of boundary conditions, to discuss available analytical and numerical procedures, and to recommend an appropriate method of solution for tidal problems.
